What Is Penetration Sealing?
Penetration sealing is a passive fire protection (PFP) method that keeps fire and smoke contained within a building’s fire compartments. Passive fire protection is a fundamental part of building fire safety and is just as important as active fire protection.
Fire-resistant walls, floors and doors form these compartments, but pipes, cables and ducts pass through them and leave openings where flames can spread to the storey above. Every service penetration must be properly sealed so that the fire stays in its area for a minimum period, giving people time to escape and fire fighters time to extinguish the fire.
Sealing solutions include fire wraps and collars, fire mortars and boards, fire-rated acrylics and other special sealants, fire paints, fire transits, and putty pads and cords. Intumescent fire grilles can be used for special openings.
Installers must follow the exact manufacturer’s instructions and use only certified products with CE marking and all required certificates. Technical handbooks are available. Passive fire protection is effective only when fitted by trained installers.
